ENVIRONMENT PROTECTION
The Eco-focus - Environment Protection & Preservation
GAIL’s commitment to Environment is explicitly contained in its Vision Statement and its initiatives in this focus area, are spread across a wide spectrum. Some of the most rewarding and satisfying works for GAIL in the area of environment have been:
- Rain water harvesting – GAIL’s initiatives in rain water harvesting have been very successful and resulted in an increase in the water level besides facilitating increased irrigation and cultivation of crops. This has also resulted in curtailing migration of the youth while Agro farming and inter cropping has also been put to practice due to increased water facility available.
- Wild life preservation: GAIL’s support to the wildlife has contributed towards conservation of animals of rare species, protection of forest trails. GAIL has been supporting wildlife through support to Mobile Veterinary Services (MVS) units in the North-East. Our successful intervention in this area has been contribution of vehicles for Save the Tiger Project in Malenad-Mysore Tiger conservation area, along with construction of a Field Research Center at Melinahuluwathi, Bhadra Wild Reserve (implemented through Centre for Wildlife Studies, Bangalore) and support to the Mobile Veterinary Service units running in the wildlife sanctuaries of Manas National Park, through Wildlife Trust of India.
- Solar lighting : A recent and very successful initiative taken by GAIL has been in the area of alternate energy and its application in lighting in rural areas. GAIL had undertaken a pilot project at two villages near its Plant in Pata, U.P. for installation of a hundred solar street lights. Following the success of this project, specially the participation of village leaders in ownership and maintenance of these lights, GAIL has also installed 100 solar lights at a tribal village near its plant at Vijaipur (M.P.).
