City Gas Distribution

Connecting Cities — Reaching Doorsteps: GAIL (India) Limited stands at the forefront of India’s City Gas Distribution (CGD) revolution — bringing cleaner, safer, and more efficient energy solutions directly to homes, industries, and vehicles. As a pioneer in CGD, GAIL has played a transformative role in shaping India’s urban energy ecosystem and advancing the nation’s transition towards a gas-based economy.

Expanding Energy Access Across India

GAIL has been directly authorized to develop CGD networks in six key cities: Varanasi (Uttar Pradesh), Khordha / Bhubaneswar (Odisha), Cuttack (Odisha), Patna (Bihar), Ranchi (Jharkhand), and East Singhbhum / Jamshedpur (Jharkhand). These Geographical Areas are aligned with the prestigious Pradhan Mantri Urja Ganga pipeline project (Jagdishpur–Haldia–Bokaro–Dhamra Natural Gas Pipeline (JHBDPL)), significantly enhancing gas accessibility across eastern India.

A Pioneer in City Gas Distribution

GAIL’s CGD journey began in the early 1990s with pilot projects in Delhi and Mumbai. These initiatives successfully led to the formation of two major joint ventures: Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL) in Delhi and Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) in Mumbai. These companies revolutionized urban fuel consumption by introducing PNG and CNG at scale, drastically improving air quality and daily convenience for millions of residents.

Building on this foundational success, GAIL expanded its CGD footprint through 8 major Joint Venture Companies across India, including: Bhagyanagar Gas Limited (Andhra Pradesh & Telangana), Aavantika Gas Limited (Madhya Pradesh), Central U.P. Gas Limited (Uttar Pradesh), Green Gas Limited (Uttar Pradesh), Maharashtra Natural Gas Limited (Maharashtra), and Tripura Natural Gas Company Limited (Tripura).

Subsidiaries & Strategic Alliances Driving Growth

GAIL’s CGD operations are further strengthened by its primary subsidiaries: GAIL Gas Limited (a wholly owned subsidiary operating across 16 Geographical areas), Bengal Gas Company Limited (developing the network in Kolkata city and adjoining districts of North 24 Parganas), and Tripura Natural Gas Company Limited (supplying West Tripura and the Gomati District).

Additionally, joint ventures of GAIL Gas Limited are actively implementing infrastructure projects in Andhra Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Goa, Assam, Rajasthan, and Vadodara through entities like APGDC, GNGPL, HNGPL, PBGPL, RSGL, and VGL. On an international scale, GAIL expanded into clean energy via strategic investments in 2005 with China Gas Holdings Limited for municipal networks across China, and earlier in 2004 via a 19% equity stake in Fayum Gas operating in the Fayum Governorate of Egypt.

Strong Network, Wider Reach

Today, GAIL Group companies have established an extensive, robust nationwide CGD presence characterized by the following landmarks:

• Authorized management across 72 Geographical Areas (GAs).
• Active supply footprints spread across 21 States and Union Territories (UTs).
• Responsibly serving approximately 10.7 Million Piped Natural Gas (PNG) customers.
• Operating a widespread network of over 3,250+ Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) stations nationwide.

Driving a Sustainable Future

With strong policy support and increasing awareness of environmental benefits, the Government of India is rapidly expanding PNG connections and CNG corridors along major national highways. GAIL continues to play a pivotal role in this mission — leveraging its robust infrastructure, operational expertise, and long-standing partnerships to fuel a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable India.

Ultimately, GAIL’s CGD business framework is not just about raw energy distribution — it is about transforming lives, clearing the air, and building highly resilient urban ecosystems for the generations to come.
