Transforming coal for cleaner energy solution through advanced gasification technologies
India has long depended on direct coal combustion for energy production. However, rising concerns over air pollution, carbon emissions, and the demand for cleaner fuels have led to a shift toward coal gasification, a process that generates syngas for fuels, fertilizers, and chemicals.
To accelerate this transition, the National Coal Gasification Mission was launched in September 2021 by Government of India, setting a goal of 100 million tonnes (MT) of coal gasification by 2030. Aligned with Coal Gasification Mission, GAIL (India) Limited is strategically invested in two coal gasification projects through joint venture partnerships.
1. Talcher Fertilizer Limited, Odisha- Coal to Urea
2. Coal Gas India Limited, West Bengal- Coal to Synthetic Natural Gas
These projects represent a significant step toward strengthening India’s energy security while promoting cleaner utilization of coal resources.
