GAIL is presently operating 5 Gas Processing Units (GPUs) located at Vijaipur (2 Units), Pata, Gandhar & Vaghodia for production of LPG and other Liquid Hydrocarbon (LHC) products. Further, GAIL also operates an integrated petrochemical complex at Pata (U.P.) for production of Polymer along with associated Liquid products. LPG produced in GAIL plants is sold exclusively to PSU Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) while other LHC products (Propane, Pentane and Naphtha) are sold directly to industrial customers in Retail segment. By-products from Gas Cracker Unit (GCU) of Petrochemical plant such as Mixed Fuel Oil (MFO), Propylene & Hydrogenated C4 Mix are also sold directly to customers in Retail segment.

Propane

Propane is the most preferred fuel all over the world due to its diverse applications in industrial, domestic, commercial and auto sector, as fuel and refrigerant. Propane is an eco-friendly fuel which provides an effective way of reducing pollution and increasing productivity. Our Patrons also call it a "Fuel of Great Value" because of its customer-friendly features. Few significant advantages of Propane are as under:

  • Higher calorific value than LPG.
  • Clean fuel with no olefins, unsaturated compounds or impurities. Homogeneous mixture with no impurities leads to constant controllable bath temperatures.
  • Higher vapor pressure results in avoiding use of vaporizer with savings on cost / energy required for vaporization of LPG.
  • Environment friendly fuel leads to reduction in emission levels and soot free combustion.
  • Low Dew Point helps in avoiding condensation.
  • Reduces clogging of burners which gives increased life of burners thereby reducing downtime and enhanced productivity.
  • Flexibility to switch over to LPG as and when required.
  • Easy to transport and easy to store.

GAIL Propane is supplied ex-Production Units. GAIL has Zonal Marketing Offices located at Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Bhopal, Chennai, Chandigarh, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai and Noida. For further details on specifications and applications of Propane, Zonal Marketing Offices may be contacted.

Pentane

Pentane is a Class ‘A’ controlled product and falls under purview of Solvent Control Order 2000. Pentane is produced by processing Natural Gasoline Liquid (NGL) through fractionation in Gas Processing Units (GPUs). Pentane being highly volatile product having RVP around 0.9 Kg/cm2 requires special safety arrangements like nitrogen blanketing, pressurized storage tanks, vapor return line for decantation and storage. Pentane needs to be handled in an enclosed system to avoid escaping of vapors into atmosphere resulting in formation of hazardous mixture with air.

S.No. Parameters Specification
1 Appearance Clear colourless liquid
2 Specific Gravity (at 150C) 0.6300 to 0.6500
3 Reid Vapour Pressure (at 37.80C) 0.95 to 1.00 kg/cm2
4 Initial Boiling Point 32 to 350C
5 Final Boiling Point 63 to 650C
6 Residue on Evaporation < 1 ppm
7 Copper Strip Corrosion(for 3 hours at 500C) 1a (as per IS-1448 P-15)
8 Hydrogen Sulphide (H2S) Nil
9 Flash Point < 230C

Uses of Pentane:

Pentane is primarily being reprocessed into Iso, normal & commercial pentane which find application as blowing agent for manufacture of EPS, PU and LAB. Pentane can also be used for blending with heavier Solvents and as additive in automotive and aviation fuels. It also finds application as raw material for production of chlorinated pentanes and pentanols, manufacture of artificial ice, low-temperature thermometers, solvent extraction processes and blowing agent in plastic etc.

Naphtha

Naphtha is a light hydrocarbon liquid, normally refers to a different flammable liquid mixture of hydrocarbons i.e. a distillation product from natural gas/petroleum. Naphtha is a colourless to reddish-brown volatile aromatic liquid. Naphtha is a controlled product under purview of Naphtha Control Order 2000.

Naphtha is primarily consumed by Power, Fertiliser, Steel and Petrochemical sectors. In Power and Steel sector it is used as a fuel whereas Petrochemical and Fertilizer Units consume it both as fuel or feedstock. Major application of Naphtha is as a chemical feedstock for steam cracking to produce petrochemicals such as Ethylene, Propylene & Pyrolysis Gasoline.

Presently, GAIL is marketing Naphtha exclusively to large volume institutional customers in Power, Fertilizer & Petrochemical sectors, from production units at Vijaipur, Pata, Vaghodia and Gandhar.
