GAIL remains committed to the principles of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) which it strongly believes play a defining role in the development of the country. The Company’s vision of “value creation” for all stakeholders remains the guiding force behind the social interventions. A top-to-bottom, robust governance structure with a dedicated team of CSR professionals, helps in evaluating and selecting meaningful social programmes which are in alignment with the areas of intervention specified under the Companies Act 2013.

Following a Project-based Approach towards all CSR interventions, as detailed in the CSR Policy, GAIL has implemented CSR programmes primarily in the rural areas which are in close proximity to the major work centres/installations of the Company. As identified under Schedule VII of the Companies Act, 2013, GAIL has identified seven broad areas of CSR intervention, each of which is titled by the objective they seek to achieve viz. Arogya (Wellness) - Nutrition, Health and Sanitation and Drinking Water projects , Ujjwal (Towards a Bright future) – Education initiatives, Kaushal (Skill) - Livelihood Generation and Skill development initiatives, Unnati (Progress)- Rural Development, Sashakt (Empowerment)- Women Empowerment initiatives, Saksham (Capable) - Care of the elderly and differently abled, and Harit (Green) - Environment centric initiatives. Details of initiatives under each of these broad areas are provided in the Management Discussion & Analysis.


GAIL Ujjwal

GAIL Ujjwal (Education Centric Initiatives)

To boost the outreach of education among the lesser privileged, GAIL has contributed for creation of school infrastructure like class rooms, IT facilities, libraries, science labs, provision of equipment and stationery to schools to enhance creativity among students and improve attendance of children.

GAIL Utkarsh is a flagship project of GAIL, and at GAIL we take great pride in being one of the first to take up this initiative. GAIL’s Utkarsh programme provides free residential coaching, including boarding and lodging expenses for 11 months at Kanpur (Uttar Pradesh), Dwarahat (Uttarakhand) and Srinagar (Uttarakhand) to 160 students from underprivileged segments of the society. During these 11 months, students are trained and nurtured to make it to IIT, NIT and other premier Engineering Colleges of the country. Since the inception of this project in 2009-10, 1139 students have been trained under GAIL’s patronage, of which 797 students have been selected – 223 in IITs and 574 in NITs and other engineering colleges.

GAIL has taken up project Bhavishya in 15 Govt. schools in Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand. Digital/ Smart class solutions have been provided in these schools as a part of the project. Further, 10 schools have been provided with sanitary napkin vending machines and incinerators. 155 Smart classes have been set up in Dharwad (Karnataka), Khunti and Giridih (Jharkhand), Rudraprayag (Uttarakhand) and various districts of Assam.

Project Avant is a unique example of focus on innovation and use of technology in classroom. The classes use solar energy powered smart classes with e-content support, practical experiments in Science and Mathematics, making learning a joyful and meaningful activity. In the year 2019-20, 75 new Govt. Upper Primary Schools in District Auraiya, Uttar Pradesh were brought under the domain of this programme in addition to the 105 schools already covered in previous years, impacting a total of 6000 children and 100 teachers.

GAILArogya

GAIL Arogya

GAIL is making proactive efforts to address the issues of health and sanitation, by introducing interventions that make primary health care facilities accessible and affordable to the rural and marginalised communities. Over the years, GAIL Arogya project has become bigger and bigger and currently extends vital health care services to nearly 15 lakh people through operation of 67 Mobile Medical Units (MMU), covering 51 districts in 15 states of the country. The MMUs are operated by a highly qualified team of professionals, including an MCI Registered Doctor, Pharmacist, Nurse and a Lab Technician for providing these doorstep healthcare services. The project primarily serves the under privileged people who have limited access to the established Public Health Centre facilities.

Clean drinking water and sanitation are essential to the realization of all human rights. GAIL has facilitated installation of over 1400 hand pumps and 75 RO/UV Plants in 20 districts across remote rural parts of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Assam, Gujarat and Telangana. The initiatives have facilitated easy access to drinking water to nearly 1.4 lakhs people. 12 Water ATMs have also been set up at Health and wellness centre in Barpeta, Assam.

Sanitation facilities have been extended to more than 31.6 lakh people through installation of more than 4200 Plastic and Stainless-Steel Dual/ Stand Alone Dustbins installed in Assam, Maharashtra, Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh.

Further Healthcare facilities, in the form of provision of medical equipment and infrastructure, Diagnosis and Cure of TB patients, support for Anganwadi Centres, eye and health check-up, counselling for cancer patients, HIV/AIDS and STI awareness, provision of nutritional kits, educational & informative video creation, CPR trainings etc. have been extended to over 19 lakh people across the country

GAIL Kaushal

GAIL Kaushal (Livelihood Generation And Skill Development Initiatives)

Enabling and empowering the marginalized, so that they become agents of change lies at the very heart of GAIL's Skill development centric initiatives. GAIL in the past year operated two GAIL Institute of Skills (GIS) in Nagaram, East Godavari, Andhra Pradesh and Guna, Madhya Pradesh. Out of the 88 candidates trained in trades of Industrial Electrician (Oil & Gas), Industrial Welder (Oil & Gas) and Draughtsman Mechanical, 67 have been placed in their respective job sectors. Skill training in trades such as welding technician, industrial electrician, customer-care executive, unarmed security guard and CNC machining technician have been provided to 344 candidates with a placement rate of 70%.

GAIL is the nodal PSU for Skill Development Institute, Raebareli, the first skill academy set-up in the Hydrocarbon Sector in the state of Uttar Pradesh. GAIL is currently supporting establishment and operation 06 Skill development Institutes in Raebareli (UP), Bhubaneswar (Odisha), Kochi (Kerala), Vizag (Andhra Pradesh), Ahmedabad (Gujarat) and Guwahati (Assam), jointly promoting it with other PSUs. A total of 2322 candidates have been trained in the 06 SDIs through GAIL’s proportional contribution of Rs. 23 crores in FY 2019-20.

In line with the business verticals of the company, GAIL has partnered with Central Institute of Plastics Engineering and Technology (CIPET) to train 221 candidates as ‘Plastic Products manufacturing Operators’.

GAIL Unnati

GAIL Unnati (Rural Development & Infrastructure Initiatives)

GAIL is guided by the triple bottom line i.e. people, profit, planet and takes cognizance of the fact that society's economic competitiveness is interlinked to its social, economic and environmental health. GAIL's interventions under this thrust area have therefore been designed to schematically meet all three goals.

Project Neer Nidhi is an integrated watershed management and livelihood promotion program for strengthening and improving the conditions of rain-fed areas of Raghogarh block of district-Guna, Madhya Pradesh. The project also aims to promote rural livelihood in 17 identified villages. A total of 3560 households are being covered as a part of the project with major focus on women empowerment through creation of Self Help Groups, trainings on improved agricultural technologies, seed distribution, digging of recharge pits, setting up of a training centre, construction of compost pits, Bio gas plants, bunding, and training on water management and water budgeting. It is expected to benefit about 21000 people.

GAIL has supported development of 03 Integrated Livestock Development Centres (ILDCs) at Guna (Madhya Pradesh), wherein each ILDC will serve 10 nearby villages. The projects are operating Cattle Breed Improvement Program (CBIP) through the establishment of ILDCs for providing the services of artificial insemination & veterinary first aid to cows & buffaloes at the doorsteps of the farmers.

GAIL Saksham

GAIL Saksham ( Care Of The Elderly And Differently Abled )

GAIL is sensitive to the fact that the interventions must address the needs of communities at the periphery of development and recognises its responsibility towards various stakeholder groups, for holistic development of all. GAIL is supporting a holistic education program for visually impaired children at the National Association for the Blind, Delhi. The primary objective of the project is to prepare these children for quality education in mainstream schools and promote inclusion in the society by integrating the visually disabled children with the society from an early age. The programme endeavours to provide a visually impaired child the same opportunities of education and development which are available to the non-disabled.

GAIL organized two distribution camps in Datia (Madhya Pradesh) and Karaikal (Puducherry) in FY 2019-20, covering over 560 differently abled people. These individuals were provided with assistive aids and equipment in the form of wheelchairs, motorized tricycles, smart canes, crutches, hearing aids with batteries and other customized devices.

Clubfoot is a congenital deformity that severely twists the foot downward and inward, making walking difficult or impossible. In order to address this disability which can be completely cured through non-surgical procedures, GAIL is supporting 50 weekly clubfoot clinics across various districts of Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Assam, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Uttarakhand.

A Cochlear implant is a hearing prosthesis designed to restore or to provide a level of auditory sensation to adults and children who have a severe to profound sensory-neural hearing impairment. cochlear Implants have been provided to 10 children with hearing disability in Andhra Pradesh.

GAIL Sashakt ( Women Empowerment Initiatives)

GAIL firmly believes that a woman's position is a true reflection of a society's progress. GAIL, through Project Saheli, has organised specialized health & sensitization camps to identify and diagnose women and adolescent girls, who largely face the potential risk of getting infected from life threatening chronic diseases. The camps act as an opportunity to inculcate in them, safe and sustainable menstrual practices, along with educating them about nutrition, menstrual hygiene management, & prevention of STDs. Video and interactive counselling sessions were also conducted to sensitize about ‘Good Touch Bad Touch’, Sexual Abuse, and other crimes against children, adolescents and women.

GAIL Bharosa Centre at Medchal immensely helps women & children in distress by providing round the clock integrated services at one single place. The centre will have unique features like special counselling room for child victims, video conferencing facility for recording the judicial statements, trauma counselling by experts, medical services, special workshops for victims & their families, along with creation of victim support groups, victim assistance through rehabilitation and financial assistance. It will also serve as the location for Child Help Line & Child Welfare Committee to address the needs of victims.

GAIL has taken up project Adivasi Mahila Pragati to improve health & hygiene of tribal Women in West & East Godavari, Andhra Pradesh by providing low cost sanitary Napkins manufacturing. The project also aims at improving school attendance among tribal girls aged between 10 and 17 years in primary & secondary schools, provide affordable access to safe hygiene practices and encourage tribal women to use sanitary napkins.

GAIL Harit

GAIL Harit (Environment Related Initiatives)

Commitment towards the environment forms an implicit part of GAIL's Vision statement. As part of the bigger sustainability ambit, GAIL remains conscious of sensitivities associated with natural habitats and ecosystems.

GAIL has taken proactive measures to address the problem of air pollution in Delhi-NCR. In order to understand and subsequently address this issue, GAIL has worked to tackle the problem of stubble burning in Punjab. The project is being implemented in 5 villages of Raikot block in Ludhiana district. It will benefit 706 households (3500 people approx.) who are marginal and low-income farmers. The project will cover a total area of 3382 acres of land spread in 5 villages of intervention.

GAIL is supporting Dehradun Zoo in a resource efficiency and renewable energy project, which is an initiative for sustainable environment aimed at reducing dependency on conventional sources of power consumption and therefore reducing the Zoo’s carbon foot print and also developing the zoo as a role model in the country. The project aims to use solar energy to meet almost all energy requirements of the zoo.

The word Shrijan in Hindi means ‘Creation’. After the devastating floods of 2013, GAIL took it upon itself to rehabilitate 10 villages of the valley in Rudraprayag region of Uttarakhand under ‘Project Shrijan’, which aimed at long term rehabilitation work in the selected villages. Over the last 2-3 years, the success and response the project has received from the people is overwhelming.

Project Shrijan adopts a comprehensive approach to disaster mitigation and awareness. It provides people with income generation opportunities while simultaneously making them more aware and alert towards a future disaster situation. Right from organizing trainings to support livelihood to providing disaster resistant infrastructure in the villages to psychological support for dealing with the trauma of loss, Project Shrijan has touched over 7000 lives.

The products made by the beneficiaries of projects Shrijan are a humble but true representation of the resilience of the people of the valley which is in complete alignment with GAIL’s objective of building a resilient ecosystem.
